St Patrick’s Keady 3-17
St Columba’s Portaferry 1-10
The hurlers of St Patrick’s Keady regained the Kirk Cup (Ulster Colleges u16.5 Hurling B) after a break of five years when they comprehensively defeated the Down boys from St Columba’s College Portaferry. The final took place on Monday 10th April at the Woodlands GAA complex in Belfast.
When the game finally got underway, due to a delay, it was Keady who struck first with a 65 metre free well converted by captain Fionntain Donnelly.Nathan Hunt followed up with a neat point from play to give the maroon and gold jerseys a lead they would retain for the rest of the game. After some good approach work from Mark Lennon Sean og McGuinness released an incisive pass to the onrunning Fionntain Donnelly who hit the net to open up a gap after 10 minutes.Furher points followed from Hunt, Donnelly and the youngest Keady player Ciaran Donnelly.Portaferry kept in touch with some good long range shooting from play and frees and then got a goal from a goalmouth scramble to close the gap to two points at the break,a slender lead considering Keady’s dominance for much of the half.
St Patrick’s 1-8 St Columba’s 1-6
The second half got underway like the first with a free from Fionntain Donnelly after two minutes and it remained a two point gap for the third quarter with further points from captain Donnelly,Hunt and half time replacement Louis Hughes.Keady were beginning to make repeated attempts at goal and the final breakthrough came when Louis Hughes off loaded to Sean og to strike a fine goal and this was followed up a few minutes later by a well finished goal from the improving Shea McNaughton and a few more points were added to kill off the yellow and black clad Down boys.a much improved second half performance with better marking, tackling, dispossessing and passing saw the St Patrick’s boys win comfortably by 13 points.
